Kojima and Playstation, a Match Made in Heaven

It is no secret that over the last six months there has been some serious drama between Hideo Kojima and Konami. If you haven’t heard, feel free to read up here. Needless to say it was a messy divorce. Give credit to Kojima who has remained silent and calm throughout the ordeal, never speaking out against Konami who have been complete and utter douchebags about the whole thing. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that sometimes the time comes to part way and that a company may have to let a successful developer go due to creative differences, change in business direction, etc. No problems there. But where Konami has really lost face and turned themselves into the big evil corporation caricature was when they started pulling bullshit like preventing Kojima from receiving an award for Metal Gears V, removing his logo and names from any and all marketing for the game, and canceling PT the new Silent Hill collaboration between Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro. They have gone to pretty extreme lengths to give Kojima one last “screw you” as they shuffle him right out the door.

     Whatever, fuck you too Konami

It’s their loss and in reality Kojima is going to be better off for it in the long run. Although Konami owned the rights to Metal Gear Solid and the now-canceled Silent Hills, the franchises were not what made those games special, Kojima was. Look no further than how terrible the last 4 Silent Hill games were if you need evidence of this. There had been a growing sense that the company was stifling Kojima’s  creativity and meddling with his games for years anyways, as he did not fit the mold of a corporate mainstream game developer. So here’s to his freedom. He has decided to go the way of the independent, so he will finally have full creative and developmental freedom to continue making the games that he wants. And who are we kidding, you know his fans are going to completely flock to his new studio and be chomping at the bit to buy his new game, regardless of what that game is. Playstation obviously knew that too because they wasted no time in signing him to a new deal for exclusive rights to his new franchise. I happen to be a Playstation loyalist myself so I’m pretty stoked about this.

Playstation, at least for this current generation, has continued to consider itself “king of the independents” due to their support and mostly hands off approach to letting small, independent studios come up with their own games. Safe to say that whatever Kojima’s next project is going to be it isn’t going to be small by any means. That’s just not his style. But I feel confident that Playstation is going to give him a very long leash with whatever he wants to do, and the gaming world is sure to benefit from it. He has even gone back on record stating he wants to work with Del Torro again. Here’s hoping that happens. Either way it seems that the dust has finally settled and Kojima is on to bigger and better things with a bigger and better company. Enjoy your cell phone games Konami, you lost a good one!
